Brubeck à la mode

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Brubeck à la mode · This 1960 studio album consists almost entirely of compositions by the clarinettist Bill Smith. It was one of three albums the quartet made with Smith. Besides the pianist Dave Brubeck, the bassist Eugene Wright and the drummer Joe Morello play on it.

The cover is striking: the quartet sit laughing and eating ice cream at an ice-cream parlour. The author Todd R. Decker places that image in the context of the civil rights movement, with the sit-ins at lunch counters in Greensboro and Nashville. The music received a mixed reception. Scott Yanow of AllMusic felt that the music swings and that there are good solos, but that no single piece is truly memorable. Billboard wrote in January 1961 that the music is swinging and lively.

Listening

Listening tip. In Frisco Fog, at just over six minutes the longest track on the album, listen to the interplay between clarinet and piano.
