Who is Gary Burton?

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Who is Gary Burton? · This album by the vibraphonist Gary Burton was recorded in September 1962 in Studio A of RCA Victor in New York and was released on RCA. The line-up is larger than on his debut. You hear, among others, the alto saxophonist Phil Woods, the trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, the trumpeter Clark Terry, the pianist Tommy Flanagan, the bassist John Neves and the drummer Joe Morello. Two pieces were recorded on the first day, the other five a day later.

The pieces, too, are varied. There are works by Chris Swansen, Michael Gibbs, George Shearing and Jaki Byard, alongside My Funny Valentine by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers. According to AllMusic, the young vibraphonist had already proved himself as an accompanist and was now breaking new ground as a master of his instrument. He played with four mallets at once, seemingly with little effort.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to My Funny Valentine and notice the tone of the vibraphone. Try to hear how the melody and the chords sound at the same time.
