“Love and Theft”
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
“Love and Theft” · Love and Theft was released on 11 September 2001 and is Bob Dylan's thirty-first studio album. It was his first record with the band he was touring with at the time, joined by keyboard player Augie Meyers. The twelve tracks were recorded in May 2001 in twelve days at Clinton Recording in Manhattan. According to engineer Chris Shaw, he let go of arrangements quickly and would try a song in another key, at another tempo or in another style until it fitted.
The sound draws on old American music: jump blues, slow blues, rockabilly, Tin Pan Alley and Country Swing. The characters are crooks, gamblers and drifters. High Water (for Charley Patton) paints a portrait of Southern history, and Sugar Baby closes as a long, sombre ballad with plenty of echo. Critics received it even more enthusiastically than the record before. According to Dylan himself, it is about business, politics and war, and perhaps a little love.
