Modern Times
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Modern Times was released on 29 August 2006 and is Bob Dylan's thirty-second studio album. After Time Out of Mind and Love and Theft, it was the third acclaimed record in a row. He produced it himself under the pseudonym Jack Frost. He recorded it with his touring band in New York, after rehearsals in Poughkeepsie. According to engineer Chris Shaw, the sessions lasted about a month, slightly longer than for the previous record.
The music stays close to blues, rockabilly and the balladry of the pre-rock 'n' roll era. A debate arose because he had used choruses and arrangements from older songs without crediting them. Rollin' and Tumblin' is a blues standard that Muddy Waters also played; apart from the first line, the lyrics are new. The album entered at number 1 in the United States, for the first time since Desire in 1976. It won Grammys, topped Rolling Stone's list for 2006 and inspired Elton John.
