Time Out of Mind

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Time Out of Mind · After Under the Red Sky in 1990, Bob Dylan had gone for years without releasing new songs of his own, only two albums of folk covers and a live record. In the winter of 1996 he wrote a new batch of songs on his farm in Minnesota. Producer Daniel Lanois, with whom he had earlier made Oh Mercy, recorded them with him at Criteria Studio in Miami. The official sessions began in January 1997. He wanted a sound influenced by early blues musicians such as Charley Patton and Little Walter.

The album sounds atmospheric, thanks to carefully placed microphones and a distinctive mix. Many fans and critics saw the record as his comeback. It won three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year in 1998. He himself was not satisfied with the sound, and he produced his later albums himself.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Love Sick and notice how the singer sounds: according to producer Lanois, the voice was treated like a harmonica being overdriven through a small guitar amplifier.
