Anime

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

From the 1970s Japanese animation received series and films of its own with ambitious music. Hiroshi Miyagawa wrote the orchestral music and the theme song for Uchū Senkan Yamato (1974). For Akira (1988) the music collective Geinoh Yamashirogumi made a score with Indonesian gamelan, Japanese Noh chanting and electronics. In Ghost in the Shell (1995) Kenji Kawai combined a choir in Bulgarian singing style on an ancient Japanese text with drums and synthesizers. With her band Seatbelts, Yoko Kanno wrote big band jazz and blues for the series Cowboy Bebop (1998). Anime music is very diverse and often appears as an album in its own right.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the unexpected combinations: gamelan with electronics, ancient folk singing with synthesizers, big band for fast action.
