Hiroshi Miyagawa

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Hiroshi Miyagawa is a Japanese composer best known for the music of Space Battleship Yamato, also called Star Blazers in the West. He worked for the producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki, whose company West Cape Corporation made the Yamato series.

Music and breakthrough

His music for the series was released on many records, including as Symphonic Suite Yamato in 1977 and later as collections of background music for the various parts and films, such as Yamato yo Towa ni and Space Battleship Yamato III. In 1985 he wrote the music for the science-fiction film Odin: Photon Sailer Starlight, directed by Toshio Masuda, who had also worked on Yamato.

Influence

Miyagawa wrote orchestral music for animation, with big melodies and a symphonic sound that suits the space adventures. In this way he belongs to the composers who gave Japanese animation a sound of its own. His themes are made to carry stories of space travel, courage and loss, and they stay with the viewer after the film has ended.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Symphonic Suite Yamato. Notice the big orchestral themes and how they sound both rugged and melodious.
