Gamelan
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Gamelan · A gamelan is an orchestra of bronze gongs, metallophones and drums from Java and Bali, played as a single instrument. Forerunners can already be seen on the reliefs of Borobudur, built around 800; in the Majapahit empire the instruments acquired their present form. Melodies run in cycles that are closed by a large gong, and each layer plays at its own tempo. The tunings slendro and pelog do not fit into the Western scale, which fascinated Debussy in 1889.
