I Wayan Lotring

I Wayan Lotring from Kuta, born around 1887, was one of the great innovators of Balinese gamelan. He learned the legong repertoire in Sukawati and in Kuta led a gamelan palégongan and a gendér wayang, which were recorded in 1928. In pieces such as Gambangan he built something new out of old forms. The Canadian composer Colin McPhee wrote that Lotring would wake at night to the new music in his head.
