Kulintang

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Kulintang is a row of five to nine bronze knobbed gongs lying on a wooden frame. Among the Maguindanao and Maranao on Mindanao and the peoples of the Sulu archipelago, it is the core of an ensemble with large hanging gongs, the agung and gandingan, and the drum dabakan. The music is heard at weddings and festivals, and it is often regarded as an instrument for women. European travellers described the centuries-old tradition as early as the sixteenth century.

Listening

Listening tip. José Maceda recorded this Maguindanao player in 1955 in Dulawan, Cotabato. Listen to the melody on the row of gongs: can you hear how a short pattern keeps returning, ornamented differently each time?
