Studio Ghibli
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, after the success of Kaze no tani no Naushika (1984). From that film onwards, Miyazaki worked with Joe Hisaishi. Hisaishi came from minimal music and writes clear melodies that often begin small on the piano and grow into a full orchestra. He combines Western Romanticism with Japanese scales. Tonari no Totoro (1988) was given cheerful children's songs. Mononoke-hime (1997) is grand and dark, with a mighty main theme. Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001) alternates waltz, jazz and melancholy piano. Ghibli also worked with other composers, such as the French harpist Cécile Corbel for Kari-gurashi no Arietti (2010). Silence and natural sounds are given a great deal of room in these films.
