Joe Hisaishi

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Joe Hisaishi (born Mamoru Fujisawa in 1950) studied composition at the Kunitachi College of Music and began in minimal music. His stage name is a Japanese corruption of Quincy Jones. Beginning with Kaze no tani no Naushika (1984), he wrote the music for almost all of Hayao Miyazaki's films, such as Tonari no Totoro (1988), Mononoke-hime (1997) and Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001). His style combines simple, song-like melodies with romantic orchestral music and repeated patterns from minimal music. For director Takeshi Kitano he wrote cooler, sparer music, as in Hana-bi (1997). He often conducts his music himself in concerts.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the piano melody that sounds simple at first and is then taken over by strings, with small repeated patterns underneath.
