Yoko Kanno

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Yoko Kanno (born 1963) began as a composer of video game music and played keyboards in a pop band. In anime she became known for her enormous stylistic range. For Macross Plus (1994) she wrote orchestral music, pop songs and electronic tracks side by side. For the series Cowboy Bebop (1998) she founded the band The Seatbelts, which played jazz, blues, funk and country. The opening theme Tank! is a big band number with brass, bongos and a walking bass. In Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002) she combined electronics with the voice of the Russian singer Origa. Kanno shows that an anime score is more an album than a string of cues.

Listening

Listening tip. In Tank!, listen for the brass section, the fast walking bass and the breaks in which the band briefly falls silent.
