Showtek

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Showtek is a Dutch dance duo from Eindhoven, consisting of the brothers Wouter and Sjoerd Janssen. They started in 2001 with techno and switched to hardstyle in 2003. Wouter mainly made hard trance under the name Walt, and Sjoerd hardstyle as Duro. Their first album, Today Is Tomorrow, was released in 2007 on their own label Dutch Master Works. In 2009 came Analogue Players in a Digital World, which was presented at the Amsterdam Dance Event.

Music and breakthrough

Later they switched from hardstyle to house music. From 2011 they worked with Tiësto, and in 2012 they started Crazy Collabs, a series of collaborations with producers from other genres, such as Tiësto, Hardwell and Justin Prime. They also contributed to Nobody's Perfect by Chris Brown. In 2013 they founded the label Skink, licensed to Spinnin Records. In 2014 they made Bad with David Guetta and Vassy, and in 2016 Believer with Major Lazer. In 2014 they ranked 17th in the list of best DJs, in 2016 96th.

Influence

Their sound revolves around hard, pounding basses, tight rhythms and big, dancefloor-oriented drops. In 2023 they returned to hardstyle after fifteen years, with a performance at Qlimax, and in 2024 the hardstyle album 360 Blue was released. Showtek shows how a Dutch hardstyle scene grew into international dance music.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Bad with David Guetta and notice the build-up: the lyrics and melody build, and then a hard, rhythmic drop follows.
