Hardstyle

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Hardstyle · Around 2000 hardstyle emerged in the Netherlands, out of German hard trance and Dutch hardcore. The organisation Q-dance held parties such as Qlubtempo and Qlimax, had the name hardstyle registered in 2002 and launched the festival Defqon.1 in 2003. The basis is a hard, distorted bass drum, at first around 140 to 150 bpm and later faster. Between the kicks falls a reverse bass: a bass note that sounds exactly between the bass drums. Above it come big synthesizer melodies. Headhunterz, Showtek and Brennan Heart became the best-known names.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Just Begun for the way the bass keeps falling in between the hard bass drums: the reverse bass that makes hardstyle recognisable.
