Sex Pistols
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The Sex Pistols were formed in London in 1975 by guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock, with singer John Lydon, who called himself Johnny Rotten. The manager was Malcolm McLaren, who ran the clothes shop SEX on King's Road with the designer Vivienne Westwood. The Sex Pistols existed for less than three years, but became the face of British punk: short, hard songs as an answer to the big, complicated rock of the 1970s.
Music and breakthrough
In October 1976 the band signed to EMI. On 26 November Anarchy in the UK was released, produced by Chris Thomas. He layered Jones's guitar parts on top of one another many times, so that a wall of guitar sound arose. The single did not climb higher than number 38. After a TV interview with the presenter Bill Grundy, in which the band members swore, EMI dropped the group in January 1977. Sid Vicious replaced Matlock in early 1977. God Save the Queen was released during the silver jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The BBC and almost all commercial stations refused to play it, but it still entered the chart at number 2. The only studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks (October 1977), reached number 1 in England.
Influence
In January 1978 Rotten announced the end of the band from a stage in San Francisco. Vicious died in 1979 of a heroin overdose. After a Sex Pistols concert in that city, Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook formed Joy Division. In 2006 the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but refused to attend.
