Ladytron

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Ladytron is a British electronic band formed in Liverpool in 1999. The producers and DJs Daniel Hunt and Reuben Wu took the name from the Roxy Music song Ladytron. In the summer of 1999 the Scottish Helen Marnie and the Bulgarian-Israeli Mira Aroyo joined as singers and keyboard players. Wu left the band in 2023. Some songs contain lyrics by Aroyo in her native Bulgarian.

Music and breakthrough

The debut album 604 appeared in 2001. The second album, Light & Magic from 2002, sounded darker and contains Seventeen, Blue Jeans and Evil. Witching Hour was released in 2005 and contains Destroy Everything You Touch, the band's best-known song. Velocifero followed in 2008 and Gravity the Seducer in 2011, among others. In all they have made eight studio albums. In the early years the members wore uniforms, inspired by the film The Andromeda Strain.

Influence

The group calls its sound electronic pop. Critics speak of synth-pop and electronic rock. The singing is cool and often whispered, with many synthesizers. In 2009 Brian Eno called Ladytron the best of English pop music. It shows how the electronic pop of the 1980s was given new life in the twenty-first century.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Seventeen and notice how the synthesizers lay down a cold, tight rhythm while the singing remains almost unmoved. What mood does that contrast create?
