Fischerspooner
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Fischerspooner was an electroclash duo and performance group, formed in New York in 1998 by Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner. The name is a contraction of their surnames. Fischer was a classically trained musician, Spooner a video artist and experimental theatre maker. They began with an improvised performance of their song Indian Cab Driver in a Starbucks on Astor Place. From this grew a company of more than twenty performing dancers and guest singers. The project began as a performance artwork about entertainment.
Music and breakthrough
The debut album #1 was released around 2001 on several labels, including International DJ Gigolo, Ministry of Sound and Capitol Records. It contains Sweetness, Emerge and a cover of The 15th by Wire. In 2005 came Odyssey, which sounded more like electropop than electroclash, with Just Let Go and Never Win. Then came Entertainment in 2009, produced by Jeff Saltzman, and Sir in 2018, on which Michael Stipe of R.E.M. collaborated.
Influence
The music is cool and synthetic, with a deliberately theatrical look. Fischerspooner belonged to the New York scene in which synth-pop, club music and art came together, and showed that a show could be just as important as the song itself. The group belongs to the wave that, around 2001, gave electronic dance music a pop image again.
