Peaches
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Peaches is the stage alias of Merrill Nisker, born in 1966 in Toronto, a Canadian electroclash musician and producer. Variety called her a feminist and queer icon. Before becoming a full-time musician she was a teacher. In the early 1990s she played in the folk trio Mermaid Cafe, and in 1995 she released her first solo album Fancypants Hoodlum. That same year she joined the band The Shit, with Chilly Gonzales among others. Every band member had a nickname. Hers was Peaches, taken from Nina Simone's song Four Women, in which Simone cries out at the end that her name is Peaches.
Music and breakthrough
In Toronto she lived above a sex shop with her housemate Feist, who sang along at her gigs. Together they toured England from 2000 to 2001. Peaches moved to Berlin and signed with the label Kitty-Yo. The EP Lovertits came out in the summer of 2000, and the album The Teaches of Peaches followed in the autumn. It contains her best-known song, Fuck the Pain Away. Later came Fatherfucker (2003), Impeach My Bush (2006), I Feel Cream (2009) and Rub (2015).
Influence
Her music falls under electroclash. Peaches also inspired M.I.A., who started using the Roland MC-505 because of her.
