Het Goede Doel

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Het Goede Doel was a pop group from Utrecht, founded in 1979 by Henk Temming and Sander van Herk. Henk Westbroek joined that same year. The core became the duo of Westbroek and Temming, who wrote the songs together. Het Goede Doel belongs to the wave of bands that made Dutch-language pop big in the early 1980s, alongside Doe Maar, Toontje Lager and the Frank Boeijen Groep, among others.

Music and breakthrough

Het Goede Doel combined the cool, electronic sound of the early 1980s with lyrics in Dutch. In 1982 the single Gijzelaar was boycotted by the broadcaster TROS. In October of that year België (Is er leven op Pluto...?) was released, produced by Robin Freeman. In the song someone wants to leave the Netherlands, but Pluto and other countries offer no solution; only in the last verse does the title appear. The single reached number 4 in the Top 40. The debut album België (1982) went platinum. In 1983 came Vriendschap, which reached number 3 in the Nationale Hitparade, and Eenvoud.

Influence

Around 1991 the group broke up. Reunions followed in 2001 and from 2007 to 2015. Westbroek later became a radio presenter at 3FM, a politician for Leefbaar Utrecht and a solo artist. Temming continued as a producer and songwriter. In 2012 Scala & Kolacny Brothers recorded a version of België of their own.

Listening

Listening tip. België (1982) lasts well over six minutes. Notice the cool synthesizer sound beneath lyrics full of questions that seem to be about nothing, and wait for the last verse: only there does the word that gives the song its title appear.
