Frank Boeijen Groep

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The Frank Boeijen Groep came from Nijmegen. The singer and guitarist Frank Boeijen first made music in a duo with Wout Pennings. When Pennings left in 1979, Boeijen carried on with a band, which performed for the first time on 3 November 1979 at Doornroosje. The group belongs to the wave of Dutch-language bands that found a large audience after Doe Maar. Where Doe Maar sounded cheerful and familiar, the Frank Boeijen Groep made new wave in their own language, darker and more serious.

Music and breakthrough

The first album, Frank Boeijen Groep (1981), did not reach the chart. The breakthrough came in 1983 with Linda, which reached number 28 in the Top 40. A year later came Zwart wit, which reached number 4. The song is about the murder of fifteen-year-old Kerwin Duinmeijer, who was stabbed to death by a sixteen-year-old skinhead in Amsterdam on the night of 20 to 21 August 1983. After the song Boeijen was given police protection for a time, because the police feared violent reactions. Kronenburg Park (1985), with backing vocals by Mai Tai, reached number 12.

Influence

The band's members included the guitarist Will Theunissen and the keyboard player Jos Haagmans. In 1991 Boeijen chose a solo career. The group's last concert was on 30 March 1991 in Almere. Zwart wit shows how the Nederpop of the 1980s also dealt with social issues: racism, violence and a city in which a boy was murdered in the street.

Listening

Listening tip. Zwart wit (1984), the example from Mixtapes 7 and 11: notice the cool, clear guitars, which sound like English new wave of those years, and how soberly Boeijen delivers the lyrics about the murder of Kerwin Duinmeijer.
