Zwart wit

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Song

On 21 August 1983, fifteen-year-old Kerwin Duinmeijer was stabbed to death in Amsterdam because he was Black. Frank Boeijen wrote Zwart wit about it, and it became a hit in 1984. It is new wave in Dutch, with cool guitars and synthesizers. Boeijen showed that a pop song in one's own language could also be about a racist murder in one's own country.

Listening tip. Listen to the cool guitars and the detached vocals beneath a lyric that asks how something like this could happen.
