De Dijk

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

De Dijk was founded in 1981 by the brothers Huub and Hans van der Lubbe and the guitarist Nico Arzbach. The band emerged from the funk group Stampei from Krommenie and named itself after Amsterdam's Zeedijk. The first gig was on 1 October 1981 at Paradiso, supporting Raymond van het Groenewoud. For forty years De Dijk sang in Dutch about Amsterdam and the people who live there.

Music and breakthrough

The music came from America: soul, blues and rhythm and blues, with horns and a tight rhythm section. The debut album De Dijk appeared in 1982. In 1987 came Wakker in een vreemde wereld, with Mag het licht uit on it, written by Huub van der Lubbe and Nico Arzbach. The band received the Zilveren Harp (Silver Harp), a Dutch music prize, that year. The album Niemand in de stad (1989) was their breakthrough and sold 100,000 copies. The Gouden Harp (Golden Harp) followed later (1993), and an Edison Oeuvreprijs, the Dutch lifetime achievement award (2005).

Influence

De Dijk remained one of the most popular live bands in the Netherlands. In 2010 the group made the album Hold On Tight with the American soul singer Solomon Burke. In 2005 De Dijk recorded a version of their own of Welterusten mijnheer de president by Boudewijn de Groot. The last studio album was Nu of Nou (2019). In May 2022 Huub van der Lubbe announced that he was stopping. The last concert was on 17 December 2022. The band's archive is going to the Amsterdam City Archives.

Listening

Listening tip. Mag het licht uit is a love song in the form of an American soul ballad. Listen to how the band takes over the slow tempo of those ballads, while Huub van der Lubbe sings in plain, everyday Dutch.
