Huub van der Lubbe

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Huub van der Lubbe is a Dutch singer, poet and actor, born in 1953 in Amsterdam. In 1981 he played with his brother Hans in the rock 'n' roll band Big Shot and his Rocking Guns, which played songs in English. At the same time the brothers started the band De Dijk with Nico Arzbach, Pim Kops and Antonie Broek. The name came from the Zeedijk, a street in their home city of Amsterdam.

Music and breakthrough

De Dijk mixed soul, blues and rock 'n' roll, with horns on stage and lyrics that were almost always in Dutch. Van der Lubbe wrote those lyrics himself. At the end of 1988 Niemand in de stad appeared, the band's most successful album. In 2010 De Dijk made the album Hold On Tight with the American soul singer Solomon Burke, who sang in English. In 1995 Van der Lubbe's song lyrics were collected as Melkboer met de blues, followed by volumes of poetry such as Geregeld leven (2003). He also acted in films, such as De aanslag (1986), and sang the Dutch-language songs in Toy Story.

Influence

De Dijk arose at the time when Dutch-language pop became big, with bands such as Doe Maar and Het Goede Doel. Because Van der Lubbe was also a poet and actor, the band appealed not only to teenagers but to people of all ages. A new generation of bands, such as Van Dik Hout and Bløf, named De Dijk as a major influence. In 2022 Van der Lubbe left the band, which then stopped. In 2017 he received the Lennaert Nijgh Prize.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a song from De Dijk's album Niemand in de stad (1988). Notice how the soul and blues with horns go together with a Dutch lyric about the city.
