Welterusten mijnheer de president
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Song
In 1966 Boudewijn de Groot sang Welterusten mijnheer de president, a mocking lullaby addressed to the American president Johnson about the war in Vietnam. The lyrics were written by Lennaert Nijgh. It was Bob Dylan in a Dutch guise: a protest song in their own language, with an acoustic guitar. De Groot and Nijgh showed that in Dutch you could make serious songs that appealed to young people.
Listening
Listening tip. Hear the soft, rocking melody, like that of a lullaby, beneath a sharp lyric about bombs and war.
