Cassandra Wilson
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Cassandra Wilson, from Jackson, Mississippi, sang in the 1980s with Steve Coleman in the New York M-Base scene. She names Betty Carter as an important example, alongside Joni Mitchell. In 1993 she made Blue Light 'til Dawn for Blue Note, with blues by Robert Johnson, songs by Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison, and acoustic accompaniment without piano. The album was a great success. Her voice is low, dark and relaxed. On New Moon Daughter (1995) she sang, among other things, Strange Fruit and won a Grammy. She died in 2026 in Jackson.
