Cassandra Wilson uit Jackson, Mississippi, zong in de jaren tachtig met Steve Coleman in de New Yorkse scene M-Base. Ze noemt Betty Carter als belangrijk voorbeeld, naast Joni Mitchell. In 1993 maakte ze voor Blue Note Blue Light 'til Dawn, met blues van Robert Johnson, liedjes van Joni Mitchell en Van Morrison, en akoestische begeleiding zonder piano. Het album werd een groot succes. Haar stem is laag, donker en ontspannen. Op New Moon Daughter (1995) zong ze onder meer Strange Fruit en won ze een Grammy. Ze stierf in 2026 in Jackson.
