Betty Carter
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Betty Carter grew up in Detroit, where as a teenager she stood on stage with Charlie Parker. Bebop remained her foundation. Lionel Hampton took her into his band in 1948 and gave her the nickname 'Betty Bebop'. She sang with great freedom: tempos that suddenly speed up or slow down, melodies she made almost unrecognisable. Record companies found her difficult, and so in 1969 she founded a label of her own. She took young musicians into her trio and trained them on the bandstand. Only in 1988 did she get, with Look What I Got!, a major label and a Grammy.
Listening
Listening tip. Notice how she stretches and bends a familiar melody into something new.
