New Moon Daughter

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

New Moon Daughter was released in 1995 on Blue Note and followed Blue Light 'til Dawn. Wilson named the album after an old Ashanti proverb: sickness comes with the waning moon, the new moon heals. It contains twelve tracks, five of them her own. She also sings Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday, Love Is Blindness by U2 and Last Train to Clarksville by the Monkees.

The press responded very positively. Critics thought the album at least as good as its predecessor. They praised her deep, dark contralto and her long, mesmerizing phrasing. Rolling Stone found it more sensitive and darker than Blue Light 'til Dawn. There were also critical voices, among other things about the slow tempo. The album reached number 1 on Billboard's jazz chart and won a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Love Is Blindness and notice how a pop song by U2 takes on a slow, dark atmosphere in her hands.
