Britney Spears

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Britney Spears was born in 1981 in McComb, in the American state of Mississippi, and grew up in Kentwood, Louisiana. As a child she was already on television in The All-New Mickey Mouse Club. In the late 1990s she became the face of a new wave of teen pop, made in Stockholm and sold to the whole world.

Music and breakthrough

In 1997 she signed to Jive Records. She recorded her first single, ...Baby One More Time, in May 1998 at Cheiron Studios in Stockholm. Max Martin wrote the song and produced it with Rami Yacoub. It had earlier been offered to the Backstreet Boys and TLC, who both turned it down. The single was released in September 1998, when Spears was sixteen, and reached number 1 in more than twenty countries, including America and England. The album of the same name (1999) sold more than ten million copies in the United States. Oops!... I Did It Again (2000) and In the Zone (2003) followed, the latter with Toxic, which won a Grammy.

Influence

Spears showed how Max Martin's hit factory worked: the music was largely ready, and the singer made the song her own. From 2008 her life was under a conservatorship held by her father. It was not until 2021 that this came to an end, after she herself had testified against her family and management. Her book The Woman in Me was published in 2023.

Listening

Listening tip. ...Baby One More Time (1998) opens with three low piano notes and, straight afterwards, the voice: "Oh baby, baby". Notice how the hook lands in the very first seconds, with no intro to skip through.
