…Baby One More Time

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

…Baby One More Time · Britney Spears appeared as a child in The All-New Mickey Mouse Club and afterwards sought a career as a teenage singer. A demo first brought her rejections, until Jive Records signed her in 1997. Producer Eric Foster White worked on her voice. From May 1998 she recorded half of the album at Cheiron Studios in Stockholm, with Max Martin and Rami Yacoub. Martin played her a song that had first been written for TLC. That group had turned it down.

The result is a mixture of pop, bubblegum pop and dance, with ballads such as From the Bottom of My Broken Heart and a cover of The Beat Goes On. Critics' first reactions were mixed: they praised the commercial feel, but also found it silly and premature. Later the record came to be seen as one of the most influential pop albums, with major consequences for pop culture.
