*NSYNC

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

*NSYNC was an American boy band from Orlando, Florida. Chris Kirkpatrick started the group in 1995 with money from Lou Pearlman, the man behind the Backstreet Boys. Kirkpatrick found Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez, who knew each other from the children's programme The All New Mickey Mouse Club. Joey Fatone and Lance Bass came next. The name arose when Timberlake's mother remarked how well the voices sounded in sync.

Music and breakthrough

The group first got a contract with BMG Ariola in Munich and was sent to Sweden. There the boys worked with the producers Denniz Pop, Max Martin and Andreas Carlsson, who also made the Backstreet Boys into stars. The single I Want You Back and the debut album *NSYNC (1997) first took off in Germany and the rest of Europe. Only then did America follow, where a concert on Disney Channel in 1998 brought the breakthrough. After a lawsuit with Pearlman, No Strings Attached (2000) appeared with Bye Bye Bye and It's Gonna Be Me, and then Celebrity (2001) with Pop and Girlfriend. The music was tight dance pop with R&B influences: five-part vocal harmonies, sharp beats and choruses that stuck immediately, delivered with tightly rehearsed dance routines.

Influence

In 2002 the group stopped indefinitely. Justin Timberlake went on to become a major solo star. *NSYNC is one of the best-selling boy bands ever and a clear example of how pop music at the end of the 1990s was made in Swedish studios.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Tearin' Up My Heart. Notice how the five voices fall together in harmony in the chorus and how tightly the electronic beat runs underneath.
