Andreas Carlsson

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Andreas Carlsson is a Swedish songwriter and music producer, born on 3 April 1973. He was part of the team at Cheiron Studios in Stockholm, the studio where a large share of international teen pop was made in the late 1990s. There, together with Max Martin, he wrote I Want It That Way (1999) for the Backstreet Boys.

Music and breakthrough

When Cheiron closed in 2000, Carlsson and two other former members, Kristian Lundin and Jake Schulze, took over the studio in 2001. Later they started their own production and publishing company. Carlsson often worked with the American songwriter Desmond Child. Among other things he co-wrote Invisible, which Clay Aiken made famous in 2004, and Waking Up in Vegas by Katy Perry. His autobiography appeared in 2009, about the songs that defined his life.

Influence

Carlsson's way of working fits the Swedish school of Cheiron: songs in which a catchy melody and a strong chorus matter more than a watertight story. In Sweden he also became known as a judge on Idol and later on X Factor. Nowadays he also gives talks at schools.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to I Want It That Way by the Backstreet Boys (1999). Notice the chorus: the words sound good but hardly form a logical story, while the melody and the harmonies carry everything.
