Acda en de Munnik

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Acda en de Munnik is the duo of Thomas Acda (1967) and Paul de Munnik (1970). They met in 1989 at the Kleinkunstacademie in Amsterdam, the Amsterdam academy for cabaret and song, and made music together there for the first time. Their songs are written for a hall that listens. In doing so they continued in the 1990s the line of kleinkunst, the Dutch cabaret song tradition, which had entered pop in the 1960s with Boudewijn de Groot.

Music and breakthrough

The line-up is sober. Acda plays mainly guitar and sometimes harmonica, De Munnik often piano, and David Middelhoff plays bass and other guitars. In 1997 their first CD appeared, Acda en De Munnik. A year later followed Naar huis. It contains Niet of nooit geweest, their breakthrough, which reached number two in the Top 40. Het regent zonnestralen was the third single from that album. The song did not make the charts, but later grew into their most popular song, in the Top 2000 and on Spotify. They received the Zilveren Harp (1997) and the Radio 2 Mijlpaal Prijs (2013), among other awards.

Influence

On 4 March 2014 they announced their farewell. The farewell tour ended on 30 March 2015 in Carré. In 2016 they stood on stage together one more time, and in 2023 they announced that they were carrying on again. Acda en de Munnik showed that a song from the theatre, with a guitar, a piano and words you can follow, can also reach a large radio audience.

Listening

Listening tip. Het regent zonnestralen tells the story of a character, Herman. Listen to how the song is built like a little story with a main character, and how guitar and piano leave room for the voice, as in kleinkunst.
