Geike
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Geike Arnaert is a Belgian singer, born in 1979 in Poperinge. She grew up in Westouter, close to the French border, and at the age of nine already took part in a talent contest in her village. In 1997 she auditioned for Hooverphonic, the band of Alex Callier and Raymond Geerts. She was not yet eighteen when she went on tour with the group. With her clear, somewhat airy voice she became the face of Hooverphonic, who broke through in 2000 with Mad About You from the album The Magnificent Tree.
Music and breakthrough
At the end of 2008 she left the band to go her own way. She felt that her role was limited to singing, while she had artistic ideas of her own. With Spinvis she made music for the Flemish film Adem, under the name Dorléac, and in 2011 she released her first solo album under the name Geike, For the Beauty of Confusion. In 2019 came Lost in Time, made with Joost Zweegers. She also sang with Bobbejaan Schoepen, Tom Helsen and Ozark Henry.
Influence
Her biggest hit came in 2017, when she recorded Zoutelande with the Dutch band BLØF. The song reached number 1 in the Netherlands and Flanders and grew into one of the biggest Dutch-language hits ever. In this way a Flemish voice carried a song from Zeeland across the whole language area. In 2020 she returned to Hooverphonic, with whom she represented Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2021.
