Paul de Munnik

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Paul de Munnik is a Dutch singer, actor and cabaret performer, born in 1970 in Dronten. As a boy he sang in his mother's church choir and played in a new age band. At the Kleinkunstacademie (the Dutch academy for cabaret and small-scale theatre) in Amsterdam he met Thomas Acda in 1989. Their graduation show Spectacle Coupé won the Pisuisse Prize in 1993.

Music and breakthrough

In 1995 they came together again for the show Zwerf'On, and the duo Acda en de Munnik grew out of it. Their theatre programmes always turned into albums: the debut Acda en De Munnik (1997), Naar huis (1998), which reached number 1 in the album chart, and later, among others, Groeten uit Maaiveld (2003) and Nachtmuziek (2007). The breakthrough came in 1998 with the summer hit Niet of nooit geweest, which reached number two in the Top 40. Het regent zonnestralen did not make the chart, but later became one of their most popular songs. De Munnik sings and plays piano. Characteristic of the duo is the harmony singing of the two voices, in often melancholy songs about love, friendship, life and death. In 1997 they received the Zilveren Harp.

Influence

In 2015 they said farewell with a tour that ended at Carré, but in 2023 they returned, with concerts at Ahoy, the Ziggo Dome and the Olympic Stadium. Besides this, De Munnik pursued his own projects, such as the show Op weg naar huis (2007), a programme built around the songs of Jacques Brel, and a solo album. He also acted in television series such as Pleidooi and Help.

Listening

Listening tip. In Niet of nooit geweest, listen to how the two voices take turns in the verses and sing together in the chorus. Notice how simple the accompaniment stays, so that the singing and the lyrics come first.
