Second Helping · After the success of the debut record, Lynyrd Skynyrd's following grew rapidly in 1973, partly because the group opened for The Who on the Quadrophenia tour in the United States. The second album was released on 15 April 1974. For the first time Ed King, Allen Collins and Gary Rossington co-wrote with the singer Ronnie Van Zant.
The biggest hit is Sweet Home Alabama, an answer to Alabama and Southern Man by Neil Young. The song reached number 8 on the Hot 100 in August 1974. The three guitarists and the keyboardist stack simple riffs and feedback into a dense sound. On its release critics found the record not very innovative compared with the first, but later AllMusic called it tighter and more professional, and it earned a place on a list of the best boogie rock albums.
