Southern rock

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Southern rock · In the southern United States, southern rock arose around 1970, with The Allman Brothers Band as forerunners. Lynyrd Skynyrd from Jacksonville, Florida, made Sweet Home Alabama (1974) as a reply to two songs by Neil Young. Thirty years later, Kings of Leon began in that vein and scored with Sex on Fire (2008).

Listening

Listening tip. Hear the D-C-G riff of Sweet Home Alabama: the C is the flattened seventh degree of D, and that gives the Mixolydian sound of blues and country.
