Sweet Home Alabama

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Song

In June 1974 Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd of Jacksonville was released, an answer to Southern Man and Alabama by Neil Young. The band took up the cause of the South, although the lyrics are ambiguous. Lynyrd Skynyrd was the best-known example of southern rock: blues, country and hard rock, with three guitarists. Young and the band, incidentally, respected one another. In 1977 three band members died in a plane crash.

Listening

Listening tip. The riff is D, C, G. The C is the flattened seventh of D, which is why it sounds Mixolydian, as is common in blues and country.
