Southern Man

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Song

On 19 September 1970, After the Gold Rush by the Canadian singer Neil Young was released. On the song Southern Man he denounced the racism and slavery in the southern United States. With Alabama he did so again two years later. Young played both soft folk and hard guitar rock, and later became a model for grunge bands. His songs provoked a well-known answer from the South.

Listening

Listening tip. In Southern Man you hear Young's sharp, distorted electric guitar above the piano. The lyrics are an indictment.
