Quadrophenia

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Quadrophenia · For the Who, 1972 was the quietest year since their formation. After Tommy and Who's Next, Pete Townshend was looking for a new story, and he found it in the mods of 1965. He devised Jimmy, a young mod from London, composed of six early fans and with a fourfold split personality, to which the title alludes. The new studio was not finished, so the band used Ronnie Lane's mobile studio. During the work the relationship with manager Kit Lambert finally broke down.

The double album was written entirely by Townshend and leans on his synthesizers, sound effects and Entwistle's layered horns. Is It in My Head and Love Reign O'er Me date from as early as May 1972. The story ends with Jimmy sitting on a rock in the sea in the rain, with an open ending. The record was received positively and later gave a push to the mod revival, with a successful film in 1979.

Listening tip. Listen to Love, Reign O'er Me, the close of the record, and notice how Jimmy's story ends here: with a rock, the rain and an ending that stays open.
