Who’s Next
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Who’s Next · After Tommy, Pete Townshend wanted something new: Lifehouse, a multimedia rock opera about a future in which music is forbidden. The project proved too complicated and led to a row with manager Kit Lambert, and was abandoned. The Who rescued the songs without the story around them. Eight of the nine songs come from Lifehouse, only My Wife is by John Entwistle. Engineer Glyn Johns helped with the recording, which took place largely at Olympic Studios.
Synthesizers play a striking role, especially in Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again, which were both released as singles. The cover alludes to the monolith from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey: the band stands by a concrete pillar on a slag heap. The album was an immediate success with critics and public and is regarded by many as the group's best.
