The Who by Numbers

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Who by Numbers · The Who by Numbers was released on 3 October 1975, the band's first album on Polydor. Pete Townshend was suffering from writer's block. He had just turned thirty, wondered whether he was too old for rock 'n' roll and felt alienated from the music business. The songs are therefore more personal and more inward-looking than earlier work, and sometimes very dark. After the tour for Quadrophenia the band had not played live for more than a year.

Producer Glyn Johns, who had also made Who's Next, had to work hard because the band members had little appetite and the recording was often interrupted. Squeeze Box became a hit and was the only song to remain a fixture on stage. John Entwistle drew the cover, on which the band members appear as join-the-dots drawings. The Village Voice placed the album tenth in the critics' year-end poll. Roger Daltrey later called it his favourite.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Squeeze Box and notice how light and playful it sounds, while the rest of the album is so sombre.
