Squeeze

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Squeeze is the fifth and final studio album by the Velvet Underground, recorded in the autumn of 1972 and released by Polydor in February 1973. None of the original band remained. Doug Yule, who had replaced John Cale in 1968, wrote all eleven songs and recorded the album almost entirely himself. Drummer Maureen Tucker was to take part, but was sent away by manager Steve Sesnick.

The album did not reach the charts and quickly disappeared. The British music paper NME spoke of a Velvets album in name only. After a short tour of England, Yule put an end to the group. Only later came a mild reappraisal: in 2011 one writer called it a remarkable listening experience if you forget the troublesome background. The British band Squeeze took its name from it.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Friends, a song later covered by the band Luna. Ask yourself what you hear that fits the Velvet Underground of old, and what does not.
