Loaded · Atlantic asked the Velvet Underground for an album full of hits, and the title refers to that, with a second meaning that you can also be high. The songs were therefore deliberately intended to be short and radio-friendly. Lou Reed left the group in August 1970, before the album came out, and continued to maintain that it had been edited without his permission. A section of Sweet Jane, for instance, was cut. Drummer Maureen Tucker did not play because she was pregnant. The drums came mainly from Doug Yule, the engineer Adrian Barber and two session musicians. Yule sang four songs himself, including Who Loves the Sun.
The record was the group's fourth album and the last with any of the original members. Neither the album nor the singles reached the charts. Only afterwards did it receive much praise, and for many fans it counts as the band's last real record. Rolling Stone ranked it number 110 among the best albums in 2012.
