From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Roger Daltrey is an English singer and actor, born in 1944 in London. He is a co-founder and the singer of The Who, the rock band with the guitarist Pete Townshend, the bassist John Entwistle and the drummer Keith Moon. His powerful voice and strong stage presence made him one of the best-known frontmen in rock.

Music and breakthrough

With The Who he sang, among others, My Generation, Pinball Wizard, Won't Get Fooled Again, Baba O'Riley, Who Are You and You Better You Bet. In 1973 he also began a solo career, with albums such as Daltrey, Ride a Rock Horse and Under a Raging Moon. His solo hits include Giving It All Away, Without Your Love and Under a Raging Moon. He also acted in films and in the theatre. In 1990 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Who, and in 2025 he was knighted for his work for music and charity.

Influence

The Who is regarded as one of the most influential rock groups of the twentieth century. The group gave expression to the anger and unrest of a young generation, and Daltrey gave that a voice. In School of Rock his name appears in the description of the four members, in the chapter on youth cultures between 1950 and 1980.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to My Generation and notice how Daltrey stutters the lines. How does that fit the angry tone of the song?
