Daltrey

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Daltrey is the first solo album by Roger Daltrey, singer of The Who. It was released on 20 April 1973 on Track Records in the United Kingdom and on MCA in the United States. Recording took six weeks, in January and February 1973, during a break in the band's touring schedule. The backing tracks were made in his own Barn Studio in Burwash, the rest at the Beatles' Apple Studios and at Nova Sound Studios. Ten of the twelve songs were written by David Courtney and Leo Sayer.

Courtney and Sayer supplied the songs after he had jokingly asked Sayer for material. The opening track One Man Band later became one of Sayer's own biggest hits. The single Giving It All Away reached number five in Britain and the album entered the American top 50. The press was divided: Robert Christgau called it yet another silly concept record, while AllMusic later spoke of a pleasant surprise.
