Who Are You
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Who Are You · Three years lay between The Who by Numbers and this album. The band was drifting apart: the members worked on solo projects and Keith Moon and Pete Townshend sank deeper into drink and drugs. The sessions at Ramport Studios, under Glyn Johns and Jon Astley, went listlessly. Moon's drumming had deteriorated badly. On Music Must Change the drums were removed and replaced by footsteps and a few cymbal crashes. In addition, a throat operation for Roger Daltrey and the move to RAK Studios held up the recording.
Townshend wrote complicated arrangements with layers of synthesizer and strings and let songs return from his never-realised Lifehouse project. He also felt uncertain about the band's place after punk. Reviews were mixed, sales strong. Moon died three weeks after its release. On the cover he sits on a chair bearing the words Not to Be Taken Away.
