Face Dances
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Face Dances · Three years after the death of Keith Moon, the band released an album in 1981 with new drummer Kenney Jones. In the United States it came out on Warner Bros., a new company, and in Great Britain on Polydor. The producer was Bill Szymczyk. The title replaced The Who at the last moment: Pete Townshend jokingly called moving a match between a friend's teeth face dances. The Face Dancers from Dune may also have been on his mind.
The cover consists of sixteen small paintings of the four band members, made by sixteen British artists commissioned by Peter Blake, including David Hockney and Richard Hamilton. You Better You Bet was the first single and its video was one of the first that MTV played in 1981. The reviews were mixed, including in Rolling Stone, but the album reached number two on the British chart.
