(pronounced ’lĕh-’nérd ’skin-’nérd) · Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut was released in August 1973 by MCA Records. The band already played most of the songs live. They had rehearsed endlessly in a remote rehearsal space near Jacksonville, Florida, which they called Hell House. The producer Al Kooper saw how well prepared they were: every note was fixed. The recording was at Studio One in Doraville, Georgia. During the sessions Ed King moved from bass to guitar when Leon Wilkeson returned. This is how the Three Guitar Army came about, with Allen Collins and Gary Rossington.

Kooper thought Simple Man too weak for the album. Ronnie Van Zant sent him to his car and had the band record the song without a producer. It became one of their best-known songs. Free Bird and Gimme Three Steps were also released as singles. The album was praised and put the band on the map of southern rock. Kooper also arranged a slot as the opening act for The Who.
